INCIDENT DEFINITION

HAZMAT SPILL

A HAZMAT Spill is an accidental release of a substance (gas, liquid or solid) that can have toxic effects on people, animals or the environment.

It can come without warning and may initially appear as a medical emergency. Signs may be similar to those of a chemical attack: people experience difficulty breathing, eye irritation, loss of coordination, nausea, or burning in the nose, throat or lungs.

The presence of many dead insects or birds may indicate a chemical agent release. (Source: www.ready.gov/chemical.html).

In HAZMAT Spills, personnel affected are not necessarily considered to be "contaminated," although they will need to be treated as soon as possible. A HAZMAT Spill may occur inside or outside of the Building.
