INCIDENT DEFINITION

BIOLOGICAL
INCIDENT/RELEASE

A Biological Incident is a Biological Emergency Situation involving disease-producing microorganisms, toxic biological products, or organic biocides which can cause death or injury to humans.

Many agents must be inhaled, enter through a cut in the skin or be eaten to make you sick. Some Biological Agents, such as anthrax, do not cause contagious diseases. Others, like the smallpox virus, can result in diseases you can catch from other people.

Biological Incidents may be malicious (intentional) or non-malicious (accidental).

Domestic preparedness planning anticipates such incidents as the widespread release of Biological Agents, Contaminated Letters and/or Packages, as well as the accidental release of such agents.
